The turkey is a big bird, native to North America. The name turkey was initially applied to the guinea fowl which was presumed to have originated in Turkey. Turkeys take around 4-5 weeks to grow to full size. Birds less than 8 weeks old are referred to as young turkeys. The hen turkeys take 16 weeks to grow completely, and average around 8 to 16 pounds in weight. Larger tom turkeys may weigh up to 40 pounds. These take a couple more weeks to grow. A breeder tom turkey can create up to 1,500 poults at a hen’s six-month laying cycle.
Turkeys receive a balanced diet containing mainly of soybean and corn. This is also supplemented with vitamins and minerals. A 30-pound tom turkey (man ) requires around 84 pounds of feed an average. The expense of the feed is usually 2/3 of the complete price. The use of hormones for Raising Turkeys is prohibited.
